More I-70 Lane Switches Next Week

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Traffic on Interstate 70 in the Columbia area will again be switched as part of the ongoing project to replace the bridges at Rangeline Street, Business Loop 70 and Garth Avenue. Here is a look at next week’s traffic impacts:

I-70

  • The eastbound I-70 passing lane will be closed from 8 p.m. on Dec. 16 to 5 a.m. on Dec. 17 at which time eastbound traffic will be shifted to the existing westbound bridge at Garth Avenue.
  • The eastbound I-70 passing lane will be closed from 8 p.m. on Dec. 17 to 5 a.m. on Dec. 18 at which time eastbound traffic will be shifted to the existing westbound bridge at Rangeline Street.
  • The eastbound I-70 off ramp at Providence will be closed the night of Dec. 16, and the eastbound I-70 on ramp at Providence will be closed the night of Dec. 17.
  • The speed limit on I-70 through the work zone will be reduced from 60 mph to 50 mph.

Rangeline

  • The northbound and southbound lanes of Rangeline will be closed from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly on Dec. 14 and 15. The lane closures will alternate between the right and left lanes, with one lane remaining open at all times.

“Once again we are asking local traffic to avoid using I-70 to help reduce the potential for traffic to slow down or back up,” said Travis Koestner, assistant district engineer for the Missouri Department of Transportation’s Central District.

Koestner said this week’s lane switches at Garth and Rangeline have gone smoothly so far, and he thanked area motorists for heeding warnings to avoid the I-70 work zone.

The $18 million design-build project, which also includes building new roundabouts at the Business Loop 70/West Boulevard interchange and at Rangeline, is running slightly ahead of schedule. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by Oct. 1, 2016.
