JEFFERSON CITY - Ongoing ice storms are snapping many power lines near state highways, and the Missouri Department of Transportation is working around the clock to close roads and detour traffic while utility companies make repairs. For the latest updates on state highway closings due to downed power lines, check MoDOT's Traveler Information Map at modot.org. The map pinpoints utility damage closings on state routes, including the exact time the incident was reported and how long the closure is expected to last. The map also shows all other highway closings, and is updated continually as changes happen.
Power line safety tips:
-- If you see a low-hanging or downed power line, immediately call your local utility company or law enforcement.
-- Don't touch a fallen power line or attempt to rescue someone in contact with one. Be aware that a line doesn't have to show signs of life to be "live."
-- If a line falls on your car when you're in it, stay inside and wait for help. Keep others from approaching the car.
