Field Trip: The New I-64 |
Wednesday Afternoon - September 24, 2008 |
|
The New I-64 is a re-build of the highway that is the 'heart' of St. Louis and is the first major design-build project for MoDOT. One unique aspect of the project is the complete closure of a major interstate highway in a major metropolitan area. This complete closure was made a non-event for the Saint Louis area by the upgrade of other streets and highways in the area including pavement repair, signing, striping for additional lanes, traffic signal timing in conjunction with a major public relations campaign. Continuous updates and a Map Quest type interface called “Map My Trip” are provided on the project Web site to provide motorists with information on how best to reach their destination amidst the current closures.

In advance of the field trip, conference presentations on Wednesday morning will include:
- A project overview by a member of MoDOT’s Design/Build Oversight Team.
- Special geotechnical considerations presented by the team’s geotechnical consultant.
- An overview of what you’ll see on the field trip.
The field trip will include a van tour of the construction project including the closed section between Ballas Road and I-170. This is the only way to see this section of roadway under construction! Particular attention will be given to the geotechnical aspects of the project. |
