Bridge Work at I-470 and I-70 Interchange Begins in August - Expect MAJOR Delays

JACKSON COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation will begin essential bridge repairs at the I-470/Route 291 and I-70 interchange beginning in mid-August. Crews will reduce I-470 to ONE LANE in both directions from 39th Street in Independence, MO to the Little Blue River just south of US 40. The lane closures will be accompanied by various loop ramp closures to and from I-70.  This work zone will have MAJOR impacts to traffic and is the final phase of the extensive I-470 bridge rehabilitation project repairing over a dozen bridges along the I-470 corridor through November 2018. More details and dates will be released as the work draws nearer. All work is weather permitting.

  • Crews will be making repairs at the I-470/Route 291 interchange, the Highway 40, and the Little Blue River bridges.
  • Expect MAJOR traffic backups with delays that could reach up to 75 minutes or more, given no incidents occur within the work zone.
    • I-470 will be reduced to ONE LANE in both north and southbound directions 39th Street to the Little Blue River just south of US 40.
  • Avoid the area if possible – find an alternate route at kcscout.net.
  • If you must travel this route, plan ahead and leave early.
  • Expect various loop ramp closures to and from I-70.
  • Use the zipper merge and take turns at the merge points.

Please remember that all work zones are NO PHONE zones. Buckle up. Phone down. Arrive Alive.
Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
