MoDOT to utilize a zipper merge for a bridge replacement project in Clay Co

CLAY COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation will be utilizing a Zipper Merge as part of a bridge replacement project in Clay County. The project is taking place at

southbound I-35 over 69 Highway in Liberty, which started Wednesday, May 10 and will continue through Thursday, August 31. All work is weather dependent.

As a reminder, a “Zipper Merge” is used to help ease congestion in a work zone. Motorists are encouraged to take turns merging safely as they enter the work zone. In most work zones, motorists start to merge as soon as they see warning signs indicating construction is ahead and that there is a lane closure. However, in the case of a zipper merge, drivers will fill both lanes and take turns merging every other vehicle at the point of the lane closure. Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
