MoDOT Sees an Alarming Increase in Work Zone Crashes in Kansas City

JACKSON COUNTY – MoDOT’s Kansas City District Office has seen an alarming number of work zone crashes in recent months. In the past six months, our maintenance crews from the Mulberry Maintenance facility alone have been involved in six work zone crashes. In those crashes, injuries to our maintenance workers have varied from minor to serious. Of the three crashes that happened in December, those workers have not returned to full duty. Sadly, those crashes do not include the crashes in other maintenance facilities stationed across Kansas City.

As a reminder, the start of spring also signals the start of a busy season of road construction and maintenance work. Spring also marks the observance of National Work Zone Awareness Week, April 3-7. This national event focuses on the safety of workers and motorists in work zones. It’s imperative that motorists remember the rules of entering our work zones.

Work Zone Awareness:

Slow down

Read road signs

Avoid distractions

Stay alert

Reduce speed

Be patient
