Public Invited to Discuss Union Pacific Second Main Track Project

LEE'S SUMMIT and PLEASANT HILL - Missouri Department of Transportation will hold public meetings from 5 to 7 p.m. on October 22 and October 23, 2013, regarding the design of a second main railroad track between Lee's Summit and Strasburg, Mo. The open-house style meetings will be held Lee's Summit City Hall, 220 SE Green, Lee's Summit, MO 64063 in the Howard Conference Room and Memorial Building at  212 Cedar Street, Pleasant Hill, Mo, on the 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

At these meetings, community members will have the opportunity to learn about this project which consists of improvements to increase railroad capacity for passenger and freight rail traffic. The work will include the connection of existing sidings in Lee's Summit, Pleasant Hill and Strasburg to produce double-track; bridges and drainage structures to support the new track; reduction of curves and other improvements, which will allow increased train speeds; and safety improvements at roadway crossings throughout the corridor.  The purposes of the proposed improvements are to improve on-time performance and reliability for Amtrak's existing Missouri River Runner route, to increase passenger train speed in suitable sections of the corridor from a maximum of 70 mph to 90 mph to improve travel times, to promote more balanced use of travel options in the corridor, and to improve freight movements within the corridor.

Participants at these open-house style meetings will be able to ask questions and offer comments for the Union Pacific second main track project with the project planners and engineers. Although no formal presentation will be given, informational hand-outs and comment cards will be available to take home. If community members are unavailable to attend these meetings, questions and comments are welcome at the following email address: sjclark@transystems.com.
