PECULIAR - The Routes C and J bridge over Route 71 has a fresh new concrete deck, poured early Monday morning following a week of emergency repairs to a bridge beam.
The girder straightening, performed from Wednesday through Saturday by Flame On, Inc. of Monroe, Wa., fixed damage caused July 16 when a truck pulling equipment on the back of a trailer struck the bridge. While the incident pushed back the bridge deck pour by six days, MoDOT and the contractor are working diligently to re-open the bridge on or near the August 10 target date, prior to the start of school.
"The deck pour went smoothly," said MoDOT Assistant District Engineer Brian Kidwell. "Once the girder straightening and painting were completed last weekend, the contractor quickly restored falsework removed for the emergency repairs. Now it all comes down to ensuring that the deck cures slowly to gain maximum strength and durability."
Here's what to expect in the next three weeks:
1. Filling and paving the approaches to the bridge while the deck is curing.
2. Pouring the concrete barrier on the deck as soon as the deck reaches sufficient strength for that work to commence (at least seven days).
3. Opening to traffic as soon as both the deck and barrier reach full strength.
4. Completion of the sidewalks approaching the bridge, to be done after the bridge has opened.
