Why is MoDOT doing this project?

Regional growth has exceeded the capacity of the facilities, with over 200,000 vehicles passing through this part of I-70. The roadways and bridges are reaching the end of their life. This means that maintenance costs are growing too costly. In fact the costs to maintain this stretch of Interstate are virtually the same as the original cost to build it.

How does this project benefit me?

Motorists will be able to reach the stadiums from the north, south and west. New access at I-435 and Route 40 will better use that highway. Long ramps will handle event day traffic and this increased new intersection will provide additional points of access to the stadiums. It will also improve access to Manchester Trafficway from Route 40. Route 40 will be resurfaced at the same time these improvements are made.

What is the project time line?

In 1999, MoDOT evaluated alternatives for the I-70 and I-435 improvements. In 2005, MoDOT started the First Tier Environmental Impact Statement for I-70.

In 2007, Short Term Improvements were added to the statewide transportation improvement plan. American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds allowed the project to begin construction in 2010.

  • 2010: Construction Begins
  • April 2010: Blue Ridge Cutoff Bridge replaced by Royals home opener.
  • 2012: Project completed.

How is this project funded?

The $32.4 million budget is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The contract was awarded to Clarkson Construction Co.
