Project Will Not Move Forward
MoDOT will not move forward with a project to build the Route E overpass in Strasburg following input from a July 23 public meeting and the wishes of many in the community. MoDOT officials determined that other options could be explored to improve safety for the at-grade railroad crossing, and an overpass project would not be necessary at this time.
Open House Public Meeting
An open house public meeting to explain and discuss details of the new Strasburg Overpass on Route E in Cass County was held July 23, at Strasburg Elementary School,
600 West State Route E, Strasburg, Mo.
The Strasburg Railroad Overpass was proposed for construction starting at the south-to-east curve of Route E entering the City of Strasburg, continuing south over the Union Pacific Railroad and Route 58, and tying back into Route 58 from the south. Right of way and easements would have been needed for the project.
Why did MoDOT consider building an overpass?
Route E in Strasburg crosses the Union Pacific Railroad’s tracks in the heart of town. These tracks carry high-speed freight and Amtrak trains each day, posing safety concerns and delays for the community.
MoDOT’s solution to separate train and vehicle traffic was an overpass that would eliminate the at-grade crossing from Route E to Route 58 and also provide a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing at the current location of Route E crossing to improve safety and convenience.
Change in Location
The new bridge was proposed on the west side of Strasburg, extending Route E south over the tracks, then turning west and north to curve around to an intersection at Route 58.
Right of way must be acquired to build this bridge and extension of Route E. MoDOT had planned to construct the the project in early 2014 and be completed by the end of the year.
MoDOT also would have replaced and improved the sidewalk from the railroad crossing to Strasburg Elementary School, ensuring a safe route protected from vehicle traffic.
These community improvements were to be paid for through funds established for rail crossing upgrades. MoDOT works with Union Pacific Railroad to establish safe rail corridors and eliminate highway crossings that delay vehicular traffic.
