Route Y between Cambridge Road and Route YY south of Belton has no shoulders and limited visibility at the 205th Street and 215th Street intersections. MoDOT proposes to add shoulders, resurface, add rumble stripes, improve signing and adjust the 205th Street intersection to improve safety and visibility. The project also will improve signs and striping from Route 58 to Cambridge.

What is MoDOT doing?

MoDOT continues to address narrow and deteriorated shoulders on rural highways in Cass County. Last year shoulders were widened and rumble stripes added on Route 2 from Harrisonville east into Johnson County. This year, in addition to Route Y south of Belton, shoulder widening will be done on Route D from Route 58 to Route Y in Cleveland, and on Route YY from Route Y to Route C.

Section Changes
Intersections such as Route Y and 205th Street, where country routes follow section lines, have undergone improvements over the decades. Some 50 years ago these routes were low-speed gravel or dirt roads that would take right-angle turns at section corners where surveyors made global adjustments to accommodate difference in the curvature of the earth.

Eventually MoDOT smoothed out many of these sharp turns to more gradual curves. However, in rolling terrain, these curves have visibility issues that must be corrected. This project will address some of those issues.

Estimated to cost more than $1.7 million, this 5-mile project is scheduled for construction in spring and summer of 2015. It will be funded from money set aside for safety improvements.

Traffic Restrictions
Construction may reduce traffic at times. Shoulder widening will require at least a full lane of this narrow, two-lane highway to provide workers and motorists adequate safety. Part of Route Y must be closed while reconstructing the Route Y and 215th Street intersection.
