Why is MoDOT doing this project?
MoDOT’s Number 1 priority is always safety. We carefully monitor all 7,000 plus miles of roadway in the KC District, including this intersection.
Unfortunately this is the site of several right angle crashes and two fatalities. MoDOT completed a safety study on Route 24 and Route 131 in 2015. The study found the intersection is ideal for a roundabout which is designed to completely eliminate right angle crashes.
A roundabout is a circular traffic intersection featuring yield control on all entering roadway legs, one-way continuous flow within the circulatory roadway, channelization of the approaching roadways, and appropriate geometric curvature to keep circulating speeds low. Roundabouts may contain as few as three legs; however, roundabouts with more than four legs are not uncommon.
MoDOT put a roundabout at Route 50 and Route 13 in Warrensburg that had similar crashes.
What is the project timeline?
Construction of the roundabout is scheduled summer 2017 in conjunction with a Route 131 bridge redeck project just south of US 24.
