What is MoDOT doing to I-70?
I-70 is the major artery of the metro area and across the state. I-70 was one of the first interstates built in the country, and Missouri has not had funds to rebuild it. As a result it has become congested and the condition of the interstate is getting worse every year.
I-70 is a vital artery that needs repair to continue serving the metro area for the next 50 years. MoDOT understands the critical need to improve this interstate and the necessity to do it with the fewest impacts to motorists as possible. MoDOT plans to improve I-70 from downtown Kansas City east beyond I-470. Projects planned in the next few years include:
- Repairing 14 bridges on I-70 from downtown to Van-Brunt begins in March through 2011. Built in 1960, these bridge decks are in poor condition with increased cracking, potholes and other safety issues. This will impact about 120,000 motorists who use this corridor each day, and seriously slow traffic during evening rush hour. Click here to find out the details of the project.
- Starting in 2010, MoDOT will improve the I-70/I-435 interchange. This area is a highly congested area that impacts 200,000 motorists a day. This year work will focus on the Highway 40 bridge replacement and highway improvements. Overall, this project will add a third lane of I-70 beneath I-435, providing a collector ramp on the south side to add access from I-435 to Route 40 and replace the Blue Ridge Cutoff (George Brett) Bridge. The project is planned to be complete in 2012. Click here for details about this project.
- In 2011, replacing east- and westbound bridges from Sterling Avenue to Highway 40. This is similar to the work that is being started next summer.
- In 2012, MoDOT will resurface a major portion of I-70 at night.
