Update: Project complete
Bridge Removal, Closure of Bannister
Removal and replacement of the Grandview Road Bridge over Bannister Road (Route W) will require reducing Bannister Road to one lane in each direction from just west of Route 71 to west of Grandview Road. Lane reduction preparations are under way for the removal of the Grandview Road Bridge beginning 7 p.m. May 31. Bannister Road will be closed through 5 a.m. June 3, then reopened to one-lane, head-to-head traffic for several months. Grandview Road Bridge will be closed for several months. Work may continue into mid-October.
Contract awarded for Grandview Road Bridge Replacement
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a $2,996,235 contract to Phillips Grading & Construction, Inc. of Booneville, Mo. on Wednesday, March 6, to replace the Grandview Road Bridge over Bannister Road in south Kansas City. Construction is under way. Watch for MoDOT news releases to update road closures and construction.
Why remove and replace the Grandview Road Bridge over Bannister Road?
The Grandview Road bridge over Bannister Road is old
and in bad condition. MoDOT has removed and will replace the 43-year-old bridge.
How long will the bridge be closed?
The project will take about four months and require closure of Grandview Road over Bannister Road.
How will I get in and out of my neighborhood?
During construction, traffic will detour to 95th Street, which parallels Bannister on the north; to 95th Terrace, which parallels Bannister Road on the south; and to Crestview Drive, which is just east of Grandview Road.
The existing Bannister Road median will be removed and temporary signals will be placed at the intersection of Bannister Road and Crestview Drive to provide access across Bannister and allow local traffic from Bannister Road to access Grandview Road and neighborhoods to the north and south.
When will the work take place?
Construction started in May. Bridge demolition was completed in early June and required closure of Bannister Road for a weekend. Bannister Road re-opened after debris was removed. However, occasional short-term closures will be scheduled to place bridge beams over Bannister Road.
Both eastbound and westbound Bannister Road lanes will be restricted at various times to allow workers a safe work site.
Bannister Road also will be closed at various times to accommodate lowering of the eastbound and westbound lanes. Lowering of Bannister Road is necessary to provide sufficient clearance for trucks and tall loads beneath the new bridge. Temporary crossovers have been constructed and traffic is restricted to single, head-to-head lanes during most of the construction.
Aren't both Grandview Road and Bannister Road city streets?
Although Grandview Road is a Kansas City, Mo. street, Bannister Road is a state highway, Route W, between the Kansas state line and I-435. MoDOT has responsibility for bridges over its highway.
