Project Status: Flintlock opened to traffic on Aug. 12.
Work on the project will continue through December.
Thank you to all our partners and community members who participated in the ribbon cutting on Aug. 22!
Why is MoDOT doing this project?
The area west of I-35 in central Clay County continues to experience significant growth. The cities of Liberty and Kansas City, along with MoDOT and the Liberty School District are working together to ensure the area’s transportation options can meet the community’s growth.
The Flintlock Road Overpass, or Flintlock Flyover, project was identified as one of the area’s priorities. It will address several issues, with a focus on improving safety and reducing congestion at key locations in the area, specifically on Route 152.
In addition, the school district currently makes at least 128 daily bus trips across I-35, transporting more than 5000 kids over the interstate. To help the district move students more efficiently and help lessen the amount of traffic on Route 152, MoDOT and partners will construct the Flintlock Overpass project.
The extended Flintlock Road will feature a two-lane road, with a paved bicycle and pedestrian path.
Roundabouts will also be incorporated into the project at Liberty Drive and N.E. 76th Street.
This project is under construction. Work will require some temporary road closures in the area to allow the new Flintlock Road Overpass to tie into existing roads. In addition, I-35 will close for a very short time in spring 2013 for constructing the bridge over the interstate.
Road closures begin Wednesday, Feb. 13 through August 2013:
Liberty Drive between Midjay Dr. and Winding Woods Dr.
Flintlock Road at 79th St.;
76th Street between North Kentucky Ave. and Church Rd.
Signed detours will be in place during the road closures. Liberty Drive will direct traffic to use Midjay Drive, Stewart Road and South Liberty Dive. Flintlock Road and 76th Street will direct traffic to use North Church Road, Route 152 and Shoal Creek Parkway for both road closures.
All roads are scheduled to open to traffic by August 2013. Project completion is November 2013.
Cost of the improvements is approximately $11.5 million for construction. The majority is paid for by federal funds and the remaining paid for by the City of Liberty and Kansas City.
