Online Meeting: Route 291 and U.S. 71
Relieving Congestion along the Route 291 Corridor
The existing Route 291 corridor, from Waters Road to U.S. 71, regularly experiences congestion and long traffic queues. Backups increase significantly during summer months with an increase in lake traffic. And traffic is estimated to increase 73% over the next 20 years.
The corridor experiences congestion today that spills back and blocks numerous driveways and intersections, making it difficult to progress along the corridor. Frequent driveways and intersections add to the congestion and contribute to a crash rate that is higher than other similar facilities throughout the Missouri.
Several improvement alternatives were developed in the study phase of the project. Those alternatives were assessed on the basis of traffic operations, safety, cost, and other factors. The results of the study indicated that a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) was the technically-preferred alternative.
A public meeting was held on March 30, 2010 to gather input from the area residents and business owners. The project stakeholders and public agreed that the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) concept was the best fit for the needs of Harrisonville.
