What was the goal of the corridor study?

The project goal was to develop an improvement strategy that will increase capacity, safety and efficiency along the U.S. 50 corridor. This was a planning study, so only a preferred strategy and very preliminary plans (referred to as “20 percent designs”) were developed.

Will construction begin soon?

Construction is expected to begin in January 2007 on geometric changes to the I-470/U.S. 50 interchange with the addition of a half-diamond interchange at Pryor Road to be constructed in the first phase of the committed improvements.  All other proposed improvements along the corridor have yet to be funded.

Then, why do a study at all, if funding for this entire project is not available?

By determining right-of-way needs well in advance of design and construction funding, MoDOT can better manage the public funds it is entrusted with.  Also, developing a preferred alternative several years before construction allows time to incorporate the proposed design strategy into future land development and planning efforts.

Will the public have any other chances to give its input?

As part of this planning study, the public input process has been completed.  However, at the time any project is funded and design is started, the public will have opportunities to review and provide its input during the course of the design process, just like it does on any major project.  Anytime you have a question about a project or the state highway system in general, you are encouraged to call MoDOT at 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636).

When will MoDOT acquire the right-of-way it needs to build the improvements?

No timetable has been set since no funding is currently available except for the project to improve the I-470 and U.S. 50 interchange.

The design process for this project began in 2002.  MoDOT and the City of Lee’s Summit held a public hearing July 18 to present a project to improve traffic operations at I-470 and U.S. 50.  It includes geometric changes to the I-470/U.S. 50 interchange with the addition of a half-diamond interchange at Pryor Road to be constructed in the first phase of the committed improvements.

Preliminary plans for these improvements are in the approval process.  Right-of-way plans are being developed and should be complete by August 2006.  These plans must be approved before MoDOT acquires any right of way or easements necessary to accommodate construction of the proposed improvements.  After the right-of-way plans are approved, final plans will be prepared.  Approval of final plans is expected in October 2006.  Bid letting for the project is scheduled for December 2006, with construction expected to begin in January 2007.
