Engineering - Bridge

The Bridge Division takes a bridge project from the preliminary design phase through the production of contract bridge plans and specifications.  Structural designers deal with every aspect of the bridge plan production: hydraulics, substructure, superstructure design, plan specifications, and cost estimates.  Bridge engineers use computer programs extensively to work on projects ranging from large plate girders and prestressed concrete bridges to retaining walls and box culverts.

First assignments for structural designers include final design work, detail drawing, and computation of quantities of required construction materials.  More experienced engineers work on the preliminary bridge design to determine type of bridge, span, width, and type of materials to be used in construction.  On-site visits to fabrication plants and bridge projects in the districts give structural designers a chance to see their work from a different perspective.
