Narrative Description:

The Stouts Creek Bridge is a single-span, two-rib, open-spandrel concrete arch constructed in 1928, it has a total length of 122’. The bridge has “U” type abutments, columns with grooves, two ribs with spandrel bents and rib-struts. The bridge has a concrete deck with an asphalt wearing surface. A concrete balustrade railing, with posts over the columns is located on each side of the bridge.

The bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under criterion A and C for local significance in engineering, transportation and recreation. The bridge served as a vital link of the highway connecting the St. Louis area with the Arcadia Valley. It was located at the “shut-ins” of Stouts Creek, just above Lake Killarney. Because of the aesthetics of the area, an arch bridge was utilized for the location.

MoDOT’s Historic Preservation Section is now accepting proposals for reuse of the bridge in place until December 31, 2016. A proposal checklist is available MoDOT’s Free Bridges website (http://www.modot.org/freebridges/). Preservation covenants may accompany the bridge.
