Narrative Description:

The Lamine River Bridge (G0366) is a 1924, nine-panel, riveted, Parker through truss with two seven-panel, riveted, Warren pony truss approach spans—one on each end. The bridge is 347’ long, with two 80’ pony truss approach spans and a 180’ Parker through truss main span. The main span has a vertical clearance of 14.3’ above the deck. The portal bracing consists of a strut bars with plates. The bridge has a two-tier gas pipe rail on each side. The deck is concrete with an asphalt driving surface.

 

The Lamine River Bridge was constructed as part of project 230B to improve U. S. Highway 40 connecting St. Louis and Kansas City. The project was awarded to the Western Bridge Company. The Company was given a notice to proceed with construction on June 20, 1924 and the bridge was set for completion on January 1, 1925. The Western Bridge Company had a contract for $61,938.80 for construction of the bridge and ancillary work needed.

 

The bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under criterion C as an early example of a standard plan Parker Through Truss, it is the second oldest example on the state highway system. The Parker was a standard truss used for medium to long spans in the early years of the Missouri State Highway Department.

 

MoDOT’s Historic Preservation Section is now accepting proposals for the relocation and reuse of the bridge or its components until May 4, 2018. A proposal checklist is available MoDOT’s Free Bridges website (http://www.modot.org/freebridges/). Preservation covenants may accompany the bridge.
