MoDOT Offers Tips for Roundabout Driving

COLUMBIA, Mo. – With the opening of the double roundabout interchange at Interstate 70 and Range Line Street and roundabouts still to be built at I-70 and Business Loop, the Missouri Department of Transportation is reminding motorists it offers information on driving roundabouts on its website at www.modot.org/central. The information includes an animated video showing how the traffic flow works at the new Range Line interchange.

MoDOT and contractor Emery Sapp and Sons officials have been closely monitoring traffic at the Range Line interchange since it opened Monday morning. The biggest issue they’ve seen is drivers failing to yield to motorists already in the roundabout.

“Entering drivers must yield to cross traffic and wait until all traffic to the left is clear before heading into the roundabout,” said Travis Koestner, assistant district engineer for MoDOT’s Central District. “We plan to put up some additional signs reminding drivers to yield to others. This is a new driving pattern for folks, and there’s a learning curve that comes with any roadway change.”

Here is a step by step guide to driving a roundabout:

Slow down – As you approach a roundabout, slow down to the advisory speed and prepare to stop if necessary.

Choose the proper lane – Get in the appropriate lane in advance of the intersection. Right turns must use the right lane only; left turns must use the left turn only. Drivers going straight can use either lane.

Yield on entry – Do not proceed beyond the yield sign until all cross traffic is clear. Entering drivers are not permitted to “merge” alongside cross traffic, because both lanes of cross traffic exit the roundabout. Entry is neither a “right turn” nor a “merge.”

Enter the roundabout – When there is a safe gap in all lanes of crossing traffic, proceed into the intersection, keeping to the right of the center island. Stay in your lane.

Exit the roundabout - Once you’ve safely entered, you have the right of way. When you reach your desired exit point, simply proceed straight ahead out of the roundabout.
