MILLER/OSAGE COUNTIES - Several highway construction projects involving road closures will get underway this year in Osage and Miller Counties on Routes 133 and 17. The Missouri Department of Transportation is working to schedule road closures to minimize travel impacts. If the weather permits, Route 133 will close at Sugar Creek in Meta on March 5 so crews can replace the bridge. The route will remain closed for approximately a month and a half. "The community has expressed concern about the timing of this bridge closure, a second closure on Route 133 to realign the roadway south of Meta, and two bridge replacements on Route 17 in Miller County," said MoDOT District Design Engineer Nicole Hood. "Based on the comments we received, we've moved the Sugar Creek bridge work from late April to early March and the Route 133 realignment work back one month to September to better coordinate the timing of these construction projects."The realignment of Route 133 south of Meta will close the route for about two and half months. Traffic will be detoured. The current Sugar Creek Bridge on Route 133 was constructed in 1935. The replacement of the structure is part of MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program designed to improve the condition of more than 800 bridges across the state within a five year period. So far, more than 670 bridges have been improved statewide. The program includes work on two bridges in Miller County this year. The Route 52 bridge over Humphreys Creek was built in 1932 and will close April 2 if the weather permits. The Route 17 bridge over Dog Creek will close May 21. It was constructed in 1926. Both bridges will close for about a month and a half. A separate bridge replacement project on Route 17 over Saline Creek is scheduled in early June and will close the bridge for about three months. This bridge was built in 1925 and is located about three and a half miles north of the intersection of Routes 17 and 52. "The public understands the need to improve these bridges, but requested the closures on Route 17 in Miller County not occur at the same time as those on Route 133 near Meta," said Hood. "We've tried to listen to the concerns of the local communities and have been able to adjust the current construction schedules to accommodate this request."The public is encouraged to contact MoDOT with their questions or comments online at www.modot.org/central or by calling toll free 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636)."We are pleased with the input we've received about the upcoming construction work," said Hood. "We appreciate the support of these communities as we move forward to make these much needed improvements to the state transportation system."
