Route 5 Bridge over Soap Creek to Open 11 Days Ahead of Schedule

MORGAN COUNTY - A project to replace the Route 5 Bridge over Soap Creek is nearly complete, and the bridge is scheduled to open during the afternoon on Friday, Nov. 11, weather permitting.

The bridge was closed to traffic on Oct. 3 and will open 11 days ahead of schedule. The Missouri Department of Transportation worked closely with the contractor to condense the work schedule as much as possible to minimize the impact to motorists. The department extends its thanks for the cooperation and patience of motorists and the community while this much-needed improvement to Route 5 was underway.

The Soap Creek Bridge is located about a half mile north of Route P in Morgan County. The old bridge was 127 feet long and 22 feet wide and was built in 1932. The new bridge is 135 feet long and 28 feet wide.

Motorist should be aware that a three-way stop at the intersection of Route 135 and Route J will remain in place through Monday, November 14. The three-way stop was installed to assist with traffic flow from vehicles detouring around the bridge closure.

The bridge replacement is part of MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program, which will improve 800 of Missouri's worst bridges in five years - by the end of 2013. Eighty-seven bridges are being replaced or repaired in the mid-Missouri area as a part of this program. Currently, over 620 bridges have been improved statewide.
