Improvements Planned for Northbound U.S. 63 Cedar Creek Bridge in Callaway County

CALLAWAY COUNTY - At their monthly meeting on March 2, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded a construction contract to rehabilitate the northbound U.S. 63 bridge over Cedar Creek in Callaway County.  The bridge is located about 1.5 miles south of the Boone/Callaway county line.

The work includes replacing the bridge deck and upgrading guard rail.  The structure will also be painted.

APAC-Missouri, Inc. of Columbia, Mo. was awarded the project after submitting the lowest bid of $901,435.25.

The contractor must complete the work between spring and fall 2011.  The project will require closing the bridge for about a month and a half.  During this time, northbound traffic will be redirected onto one southbound lane for approximately ¾ mile.  Bridge painting will take place after the bridge reopens, but some lane closures may still be needed to finish the work.  Electronic message boards will notify motorists of lane restrictions as work nears.

"This bridge was originally constructed in 1968 and has served motorists well over the years," said MoDOT Transportation Project Manager Jason Vanderfeltz.  "This bridge is deteriorating and needs to be rehabilitated so it can continue to safely carry traffic on this major highway."

The Cedar Creek Bridge rehabilitation is part of MoDOT's Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program, which will improve 800 of Missouri's worst bridges in five years - by the end of 2013.  Ninety bridges will be replaced or repaired in the mid-Missouri area as a part of this program.  Currently, over 330 of the bridges included in the program have been improved statewide.

"Once construction begins, it is very important for motorists to slow down, follow work zone signing, remain patient and drive with care through the area," said Vanderfeltz.  "Motorists commuting between Jefferson City and Columbia should allow additional time to reach their destinations."
