CALLAWAY COUNTY - A new roundabout under construction at the intersection of Business Route 54 and Second Street (Route O) in Fulton will soon open to traffic. The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 17 at the new roundabout. Weather permitting, the roundabout will open Friday afternoon. Parking for the ribbon cutting is available at Fulton City Hall, 18 East Fourth Street. The public is invited to attend the event which will be held rain or shine. The $1.7 million project included realigning the intersection to construct a roundabout; an intersection that accommodates traffic flow in one direction around a central circular island. The Stinson Creek Bridge on Business Route 54 and the Stinson Creek Bridge on Second Street were removed and replaced with one box culvert."A roundabout is an effective solution for this location because it does allow us to realign the intersection to allow vehicles to make more efficient and safer turning movements," said MoDOT Transportation Project Manager Jason Vanderfeltz.Sam Gaines Construction of New Bloomfield, Mo. was contracted to complete the work. Additional work will take place after the intersection opens. Motorists are reminded to remain alert and drive safely through the area. The City of Fulton partnered with MoDOT to construct the project.
