Improvements at U.S. 50, Missouri Blvd. and Route 179 Interchange Nearing Completion

JEFFERSON CITY - This spring, work started on a project to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety at the U.S. 50, Route 179 and Missouri Blvd. (Business Route 50) interchange area. This project is nearing completion and officials will gather at the site on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m. to celebrate the improvement.

The project included widening at various locations throughout the interchange area to allow for the addition of turn lanes. Missouri Blvd. was widened to include an additional east and westbound lane west of the interchange area. A new bridge to carry Missouri Blvd. traffic over Route 179 has been constructed to separate through traffic.

"Missouri Blvd. motorists who want to access U.S. 50 or Route 179 will do so using connector roads," said MoDOT Project Manager Trent Brooks.

Work on the connector roads to and from Missouri Blvd. is still underway. The east connector road is currently open to traffic. If the weather permits, crews will open the west connector road during the afternoon of Oct. 8.

"More work is needed on the east connector roadway in order to complete the project," said Brooks. "This means that sometime during the week of Oct. 11, the east connector will close so the final work can be finished. The closure of the east connector is expected to last for approximately two weeks, but all movements to and from Missouri Blvd. can be made from the west connector."

The entire project will be finished by the end of October, well ahead of the mid November contracted completion date. Emery Sapp and Sons of Columbia, Mo. is the contractor.

Parking for the ribbon cutting will be available at the Grace Evangelical Free Church of Jefferson City located at 3011 South Ten Mile Drive. Those attending will be shuttled to the ceremony. The public is welcome to attend the event, which will be held rain or shine.

The $6.5 million project was funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
