U.S. 54 Eastbound/U.S. 63 Northbound Missouri River Bridge
Motorists Should Stay in Dedicated Lanes Until Reaching Bridge

JEFFERSON CITY - On Friday, July 23, crews constructing a new pedestrian/bicycle attachment on the U.S. 54 eastbound/U.S. 63 northbound Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City made adjustments to the traffic lanes leading to the bridge:

  • The Main Street on ramp to the bridge is closed.
  • Lanes leading up to and crossing the bridge have been narrowed. Motorists will cross the bridge using three 11 ft. lanes.
  • A concrete barrier is installed across the bridge to separate lanes of traffic from the construction crews and equipment.
  • The shoulder of the bridge, which also currently serves as a pedestrian path, is closed. Pedestrians should also note that no shoulder is available on the U.S. 54 westbound/U.S. 63 southbound bridge leading into Jefferson City.
  • The speed limit is 45 mph through the area.

Motorists should be aware that there are three lanes leading to the bridge. Motorists approaching the bridge from the McCarty Street on ramp, Route 50 on ramp and those who are already on Route 54 each have their own dedicated lane. Lanes are separated by channelizers. Motorists should stay in their lane and not drive between these traffic control devices in an attempt to change lanes.

The Missouri Department of Transportation encourages motorists to drive with care through the area. For the safety of motorists and workers, drivers should slow down, follow work zone signing, allow additional time for travel and remain patient and courteous when traveling across the bridge.

When completed, the new $6.7 million pedestrian/bicycle attachment will provide a safer, more convenient connection across the Missouri River from the Katy Trail to downtown Jefferson City. The Missouri Department of Transportation, City of Jefferson, Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri State Parks Foundation are partnering to construct the project.
