U.S. 54 Eastbound/U.S. 63 Northbound Missouri River Bridge
Traffic Adjustments Planned for Pedestrian/Bicycle Attachment Construction

JEFFERSON CITY - If the weather permits, crews constructing a new pedestrian/bicycle attachment on the U.S. 54 eastbound/U.S. 63 northbound Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City will begin making adjustments to traffic on Friday, July 23.

Work to make traffic changes will begin at approximately 7 p.m.  The changes will remain in place until spring 2011, when the project is scheduled for completion.
•·       The Main Street on ramp to the bridge will close.
•·        Lanes leading up to and crossing the bridge will be narrowed. Motorists will cross the bridge using three 11 ft. lanes.
•·       A concrete barrier will be installed across the bridge to separate lanes of traffic from the construction crews and equipment.
•·       The shoulder of the bridge, which also currently serves as a pedestrian path, will close. Pedestrians should also note that no shoulder is available on the U.S. 54 westbound/U.S. 63 southbound bridge leading into Jefferson City.
•·       The speed limit will be reduced from 60 mph to 45 mph through the area.

Lane closures, including the closure of the McCarty Street on ramp to U.S. 54 eastbound/U.S. 63 northbound, will occur as crews make adjustments to traffic, which should be complete by mid-day on Saturday, July 24.

The Missouri Department of Transportation encourages motorists to drive with care through the area. For the safety of motorists and workers, drivers should slow down, follow work zone signing, allow additional time for travel and remain patient and courteous when traveling across the bridge.

When completed, the new $6.7 million pedestrian/bicycle attachment will provide a safer, more convenient connection across the Missouri River from the Katy Trail to downtown Jefferson City. The Missouri Department of Transportation, City of Jefferson, Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri State Parks Foundation are partnering to construct the project.
