May 12 Groundbreaking for New Missouri River Bridge Attachment

JEFFERSON CITY - On Wednesday, May 12, area officials will gather on the north side of the Missouri River to celebrate the beginning of a project to construct a pedestrian/bicycle attachment on the U.S. 54 eastbound/U.S. 63 northbound Missouri River Bridge.

"Over the years, many people have expressed the desire for a safer and more convenient connection across the river from the Katy Trail to downtown Jefferson City," said MoDOT Transportation Project Manager Jason Vanderfeltz.  "This is an exciting opportunity to improve safety for all those using the bridge and to promote the area economy by encouraging people using the Katy Trail to visit Missouri's State Capital."

The groundbreaking event begins at 9:30 a.m. on the north side of the river at the Missouri Department of Conservation's Carl R. Noren Public Fishing Access located at Fourth Street and Cottonwood Drive.  The ceremony will be held near the boat ramp.  The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking, which will be held rain or shine.

The new $6.7 million bridge attachment will be eight feet wide and include two look out points with a view of the Missouri State Capitol.  A ramp structure will be constructed on the north side of the river to allow access to the Katy Trail via the Missouri Department of Conservation public fishing area.

The work will be done by OCCI, Inc. of Fulton, Mo.  The Missouri Department of Transportation, City of Jefferson, Department of Natural Resources, and the Missouri State Parks Foundation are partnering to construct the project.

"Work will start mid-May and take about a year to complete," said Vanderfeltz.

The work will require closing the Main Street ramp during construction.  While some lane closures may be necessary at times, MoDOT hopes to maintain three narrowed lanes of traffic across the bridge during much of the project.

"It is very important that motorists drive with care through the area during construction," said Vanderfeltz.  "For the safety of motorists and workers, we encourage drivers to slow down, follow work zone signing, allow additional time for travel and remain patient and courteous as they cross over the bridge."

Following the groundbreaking, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held by the City of Jefferson and the Holts Summit Community Betterment Association for the recently completed Jefferson City Greenway System Katy Spur Connection to Summit Drive.  That event will begin at 11 a.m. at the North Jefferson Katy Trailhead parking area.
