Public Meetings Scheduled to Unveil ‘Shared Four-Lane’ Highway Plans for Route 5

Camdenton/Lebanon - An innovative highway project proposed for 18 miles of Route 5 between Lebanon and Camdenton will be displayed at public meetings scheduled in late July by the Missouri Department of Transportation.

MoDOT plans to build a "shared four-lane" highway on Route 5 to better accommodate increasing traffic and improve safety. The design includes alternating passing lanes to give motorists periodic opportunities to pass without pulling into the opposing lane and helps keep traffic flowing smoother. Although MoDOT has used similar concepts in the past, this is the first project of its kind to be constructed in Missouri.

The project will relocate eight miles of Route 5 from just north of Route 7 near Camdenton to south of the Laclede-Camden County line. Additional passing lanes will be added to the remaining 10-mile section of existing Route 5 between the Camden-Laclede County line and the City of Lebanon.

Public meetings to unveil the design are set for July 24 in Camdenton and July 26 in Lebanon:

  • Tuesday, July 24, in Camdenton - 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Camdenton School District's Lake Career and Technical Center, 269 Dare Blvd.
  • Thursday, July 26, in Lebanon - 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Cowan Civic Center, 500 E. Elm Street.

The meetings are open house-style. Visitors may come and go at any time during the three-hour session, look at exhibits and talk with engineers working on the project.

The shared four-lane highway on Route 5 will feature:

  • Unique striping and signing to guide drivers through the alternating passing zones.
  • A four-foot wide painted median buffer with rumble stripes, designed to alert drivers with noise and vibration if they start to cross into oncoming traffic.
  • Left-turn lanes at major intersections.
