Local officials and media toured the Route 5 construction site on Friday, August 24. They started their tour at the north end of the project, at the new 5-89 bridge.

District Engineer Roger Schwartze talks to the tour group at a point just north of where the new Route 5 will intersect with Route 54.

Underneath about 80 feet of the dirt and rock shown here is a culvert crews worked on last summer. The fill work in this section will continue over the next few weeks.

Before the area can be excavated and graded for the new road, crews must blast through rock. The equipment show here helps crews prepare for the blast.

This service road near the new Route 5 is being paved with asphalt created using recycled roofing shingles. Using the shingles in the asphalt mix keeps them out of landfills, preserves petroleum resources and lowers construction costs while maintaining high quality asphalt pavement.

Just north of Route 54 the driving lanes of the new Route 5 are taking shape.

A huge culvert near the new Camdenton High School is almost complete.
