The first portion of the new Route 63 and H interchange project – two new j-turns designed to improve safety and traffic flow – is now open. The j-turns are located between the Discovery Parkway Interchange and Bonne Femme Creek. They are part of a larger project that includes building an interchange at Route 63 and Route H near the Columbia Regional Airport, constructing new southbound lanes from just north of Route 163 to Route H and using the existing southbound lanes to create an outer road system that will improve safety and access.
The "j-turn" is an alternative to traditional roadway intersections on a four-lane highway. Instead of motorists crossing fast-moving lanes of traffic to get to the opposing lanes, drivers at a j-turn intersection turn right in the same direction of traffic, merge into the left lane, and then make a left turn in the direction they intend to travel.
