This readme file will help guide you through some of the aspects of using the MoDOT's Specification Book.
Downloading
the specbook
The spec book is provided in Adobe Acrobat format. You should
download the version of the spec book you wish to use. After
downloading the spec book self-extracting executable file,
run the file (or double-click on the file with the mouse)
and follow the directions.
Downloading the Adobe Acrobat Reader
Provided at the bottom of the spec book page is a link to
Adobe's Acrobat Reader download page. It is important to
note that whichever operating system you are downloading
Reader for, be sure you download Reader With Search. This
enables you to search the spec book for keywords, phrases,
etc. The Acrobat Reader software was selected as the basis
for the spec book based on it's ability to allow searching
of documents. Once downloaded, run the file and follow directions
for installation of Acrobat Reader With Search.
Viewing
the Specbook
Once you've installed the Acrobat Reader and downloaded and
executed the spec book file, you can start using the spec
book. To do this, run Acrobat Reader and open the file begin.pdf
from the subdirectory where the spec book files were unzipped.
The begin.pdf file is the starting point for the spec book.
Links
In most of the spec book sections there are links to other
sections, subsections and/or tables. These links are denoted
by blue text. Clicking once on the links will take you to
the material referenced.
Helpful Hints
While Viewing the Specbook
Moving around in the spec book may initially be somewhat
frustrating, especially moving backwards (to previous views).
This is where the smarticons at the top of Acrobat Reader
can be somewhat helpful.
Within the open document, these six smarticons with arrows
move you forwards, backwards, beginning of document, ending
of document, forward one view and back one view. It is suggested
you learn how to use these icons.
Searching the SpecBook
To search for locations of words or phrases, select Tools
> Search > Query. In the Find Results Containing Text
dialog box, type in words you would like to search for and
select Search. Next will appear a Search Results window.
To view a document in the Search Results window, highlight
the document and select View (or double click on the document).
Acrobat Reader will open the document and show all the locations
of the searched text in highlights. There are smarticons
at the top of Acrobat Reader which allow for quick viewing
of search results.
