I-64 Regional Traffic Briefing – Jan. 9

ST. LOUIS - Travel times on the region's roads Thursday night and Friday morning were normal compared to baseline travel times with normal congestion spots.

"We are pleased to see the public has responded so well to the east half closure," said MoDOT I-64 Project Director Lesley Hoffarth.  "Hats off to the drivers of St. Louis for the second year on finding their way around the new closures."

Thursday evening's key congestion was focused in the 5-6 p.m. hour with the heaviest time at 5:30 p.m. on the interstates and the arterial roads.  Evening traffic continues to be heavy on Olive westbound between I-170 and I-270 similar to 2008 volumes.  In comparison, Page Avenue evening volumes have dropped back to 2007 levels.

Friday morning's key congestion stretched from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.  There is increased traffic on southbound Grand from I-70 to I-44.  Key congestion points on the interstates included the following:

  • Southbound I-170 backed up in the right lane from Delmar to Forest Park Pkwy.
  • Northbound I-170 was slow in the right lane from Galleria Pkwy to Forest Park Pkwy.
  • Eastbound I-64 was slow in pockets from Rte. 340 to just east of Mason.
  • Eastbound  I-70 was slow from West Florissant to Madison.
  • Northbound I-55 was backed up from south of Arsenal into the Depressed Section due to two crashes.
  • Westbound I-70 was also backed up from the King Bridge to Grand, and again from Grand to Adelaide due to a flat at Riverview then a crash in the Express Lanes.
