New I-64/US 40-61 Missouri River Bridge (Daniel Boone)

A project to construct a new Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River between St. Louis and St. Charles counties has been funded. A total of $125 million has been allocated for the project -- that includes money for utility relocation, property acquisition, design and construction of the project. The project is expected to be awarded in mid 2012. This project will be awarded using the design-build contracting process.

Four Design-Build Teams Pre-Qualified to Submit Proposals
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has received and pre-qualified four Design-Build teams to compete to submit proposals to build the new Daniel Boone Bridge.
Breakdown of the members of the four Design-Build Teams (pdf)
There are still opportunities for additional consultants and subcontracting firms to be added to each team. A networking opportunity for Disadvantaged Business Enterprises will be offered this spring, more information will be available on the project web site.
What is the Design-Build contracting process?
With Design-Build, the design and construction are completed by the same contractor on an accelerated time frame. This allows the new bridge to be constructed faster than the usual design-bid-build process. It will also allow contractors to incorporate innovative cost-saving ideas that will allow taxpayers to get more for their money, without sacrificing the quality needed for an interstate-level bridge.
Why does a new bridge need to be constructed?
The current westbound Daniel Boone Bridge was built in the mid-1930s. It was not designed for interstate level traffic, and has reached a point where it needs regular preventative maintenance. Moreover the current westbound bridge has three, narrow lanes that often get congested during peak travel times.
Where will the new bridge be constructed?
That will be up to the Design-Build team. MoDOT will provide a footprint for the contractor to use. Under the currently approved Environmental Impact Statement, the preferred alternative is to construct a new bridge upstream of the current eastbound bridge.
Will the bridge include a bike-pedestrian lane?
Yes. The exact design will be determined by the Design-Build contractor, but a protected bicycle-pedestrian lane will connect the Katy Trail State Park to the Monarch Levee Trail.
What will happen to the current 1935 westbound bridge?
The current westbound bridge will be removed depending on the schedule of the Design-Build contractor.

October 2011 Public Hearing
MoDOT held a public hearing October 12 at the Highway Patrol Headquarters in Weldon Spring. The purpose of the meeting was to allow the public to comment on the conceptual plans. Following public comment, MoDOT will be able to purchase the property needed for the new bridge.
