Route 50 Widening Project

Route 50

The Missouri Department of Transportation, along with Franklin County, City of Union and the contractor,

Millstone Bangert, Inc., took part in a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday, June 23, 2009 to kick off construction

of the Route 50 Widening Project.

MoDOT is excited to partner with Franklin County and the City of Union to improve this important highway. This

project will help relieve current congestion and accommodate future traffic growth in the city of Union, which is

the county seat for Franklin County.

Why Does Route 50 near Union Need Improvements?

This stretch of roadway on Route 50 was first built in 1960. Several improvements have been provided since then to address congestion and safety concerns. The roadway was last resurfaced in 2004. Currently, the average daily traffic volume is approximately 19,500 vehicles per day. By 2029, that volume is expected to increase to 26,200. Route 50 has exceeded its capacity for a two-lane roadway and can no longer handle the amount of traffic that uses it on a daily basis.

What Improvements on Route 50 Are Being Proposed?

MoDOT will widen the existing two-lane Route 50 to five lanes from Route 47 South in Union to east of Denmark Road/Progress Parkway. MoDOT proposes to add two additional lanes to the south and one additional lane to the north of the existing two-lane roadway.

How Will Traffic Be Impacted While Construction Is Under Way?

Two-way traffic will be maintained over the existing two-lane or widened pavement for the duration of this project. Any temporary lane closures will take place during nighttime hours. Throughout the construction of this project, motorists will be driving through a work zone.

Estimated Project Cost:

The project cost to widen Route 50 is $7 million that was awarded to Millstone Bangert, Inc., and is a cost-share project with Franklin County and the City of Union.

When Will Construction Begin And End?

Construction for the Route 50 Widening Project will begin in July 2009 and is expected to be complete in October 2010.
