With Memorial Day coming up and schools closing for the summer, millions of motorists will soon hit the road. This year they'll discover numerous highway work zones and potential delays, because MoDOT is in the middle of a very busy construction season, with hundreds of active work zones throughout the year. Top 10 New Projects Added to Five-Year Transportation Program Missouri's proposed five-year transportation improvement program includes a last hurrah of new transportation projects before plummeting to a program where limited funding will only cover minimal maintenance and safety work. STIP Department Praised for Design-Build Projects The Design-Build Institute of America has awarded MoDOT its Owner of the Year Award for design-build in the transportation field. The award recognizes MoDOT's significant contributions in advancing the awareness, understanding and use of Design-Build project delivery through the innovative approach to handling the first three design-build projects in MoDOT's history. Ports, Rail, Aviation Get Big Funding Boost from State Legislature During this year's legislative session, MoDOT's non-highway modes received several funding increases that will allow for major improvements. The legislature approved $5 million for new track segments along Amtrak's Kansas City - St. Louis route, which will dramatically improve the route's on-time service. MoDOT will request an additional $5 million in matching federal money for more track additions. Seven of Missouri's 13 ports along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers will receive substantial improvements with $6.65 million in capitol improvement money approved by legislators. And an additional $4 million will be available for expanded airport service, including tower improvements and assistance in attracting new intrastate airlines to Missouri. MoDOT and Partners Advocate for Rail Safety MoDOT, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Operation Lifesaver, local law enforcement agencies and railroad personnel recently joined efforts to promote railroad safety. Positive enforcement efforts will continue throughout the year. Between 2006 and 2007, the number of rail crossing collisions in Missouri decreased from 58 to 47, however, fatalities increased from six to seven. MoDOT, Conservation Team Up With Kids To Plant Half A Million Trees Half a million trees will be planted in Missouri this year through the Trees For Tomorrow program conducted by MoDOT and the Department of Conservation. Under the program, MoDOT purchases half a million trees a year, which the MDC distributes to youth groups throughout the state. Coalition Announces Upcoming Convention After reaching their goal of less than 1,000 traffic fatalities a year early, the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is looking forward to more successful years. To establish goals, share information and generate excitement, the coalition is sponsoring the Blueprint for Safer Roadways Conference on Oct. 27- 29 at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in Kansas City.
