State Will Reach Fatality Reduction Goal One Year Early For the second year in a row, precious lives were saved on Missouri highways when traffic crashes were down when compared to previous years. This year's decrease rang in the new year with 11 percent down, giving Missouri less than 1,000 traffic fatalities for the year and allowing the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety to reach a monumental goal one year early. GoalRains Closed Some Minor Roads The recent severe weather that pummeled much of Missouri prompted some road closures due to flooding and debris. Weather Missouri House Speaker Praises MoDOT's Turn Around After recently completing a transportation tour around the state, Missouri Speaker of the House Rod Jetton reported he is pleased with changes at MoDOT and the resulting progress on Missouri's roads. Construction to rebuild Interstate 64/Route 40 in St. Louis began in March 2007. All lanes of I-64/US 40 between Ballas Road and Interstate 170 closed in both directions on Jan. 2 and will remain closed for the year. This five-mile stretch of highway will reopen by Dec. 31.
